Pizza. Pizza is a flat, oven-baked, usually round bread covered with tomatoes or tomato-based sauce and mozzarella cheese and other toppings which vary depending on the region, culture or personal preference. In home-made pizza, there are many variations on the bread used for crust. In some countries, creations such as bagel pizza, french bread pizza, pita pizza, matzo pizza, as well as tortilla pizza are popular.
American pizza often has vegetable oil or shortening, what is not as common in Italian recipes. Various toppings may be added. Most typically these are tomato sauce; cheese, usually mozzarella or provolone, Parmesan, Cheddar, or a blend of other cheeses; herbs and seasonings such as oregano, basil, and red pepper; fruits and vegetables such as artichoke hearts, garlic, eggplant, tomatoes, olives, onions, spinach, jalapenos, bell peppers, banana peppers, and pineapple; mushrooms; meat, such as sausage, ham, ground beef, bacon, and chicken, or seafood such as tuna, anchovies, salmon and shrimp. In some pizza recipes the tomato sauce is omitted. Such pizza is called “white pizza”. Sometimes the tomato sauce is replaced with another sauce.
